An Evening Well Spent

My visit to Kalaignar Centenary park was quite an accident. In fact, we were supposed to go to a Victoria Hall exhibition show instead. But it got cancelled. Disappointed, I sat down with a thump. You know that feeling when the back of your nose starts to prick, when you’re about to cry? Well that was happening to me. My mom told me.
“Don’t worry, we can go to Semmozhi Poonga instead!”
My ears perked up. I smiled.
On our way to Semmozhi Poonga, a friend of my mom’s called. She informed us that Semmozhi Poonga was too crowded at this time of the day, so there was a park right opposite. Curious , we both went to check that out. Once we booked our tickets, we went in… and oh crumbs!
As we stepped through the gates, my jaw nearly hit the ground. This wasn’t just a regular park with a few swings and some grass; it was like stepping into a giant, colourful hidden world! High above us, a massive glass building called the bird aviaries shimmered in the sun, and I could hear the faint chirping of exotic birds calling out to each other. Everywhere I looked, there were perfectly trimmed gardens and bright flowers that smelled sweeter than honey. It was so much bigger and fancier than I expected. After exploring the gardens, we headed over to the Glass House. It looked like a giant diamond sitting in the middle of the park. Inside, it was filled with rare plants and flowers in every colour you can imagine—purples, fiery oranges, and deep reds. The Turkish Cap Cactus caught my eye. And I saw a Moon cactus, and wondered why it wasn’t called a Sun cactus- it was red! I felt like an explorer discovering a secret jungle.

Then, we spotted the Treehouse and the Super Tree. I felt like a bird as I climbed up high into the branches of the wooden house, looking out over the whole park. The Super Tree was even cooler; it looked like something out of a science-fiction movie, reaching up toward the sky with its wide tops.
To end our day, we saved the best for last: the musical fountain. As the music started, the water began to dance to the beat, shooting high into the air like liquid fireworks. The bright lights reflecting off the water made it look like a rainbow in the dark. Watching it, I completely forgot about being sad. Even though our original plans had flopped, this "accident" turned out to be the best day ever.
